SCA hosts its 10th Thanksgiving Blessing event
LINDA MITCHELL JOHNSON, TINA MARIE CRISS

“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them is the true measure of our Thanksgiving”- W.T Purkiser.

For the Senior Citizens Association (SCA), November is one of the busiest times of the year. Ten years ago, community leaders and founders, Bubby Floyd and William “Bill” Bradham proposed an idea to Linda Mitchell Johnson, SCA’s Executive Director. That idea was to provide Thanksgiving dinners for the Florence County senior community. What a grand idea it was.

The 10th Annual Thanksgiving Blessing luncheon took place at the Leatherman Senior Center on Nov. 3. A turkey dinner was served to over 200 Senior Citizens Association members and guests. The Thanksgiving Blessing continued at the Lake City Senior Center on Nov. 9 with nearly 200 additional members enjoying a Thanksgiving meal. This year an additional site was included; the SCA Timmonsville Center, one of four nutrition sites in Florence County, received a Thanksgiving dinner with nearly 100 senior citizens attending.

Celebrating with SCA members is just the beginning of the annual Thanksgiving Blessing event. The second phase is providing Thanksgiving dinners to Florence County homebound and in need seniors. Boxed meals including a frozen hen, packaged dressing, and three canned vegetables are provided for 1,000 Florence County seniors. The recipients include many participating in the year-round SCA homebound meal program (Meals on Wheels). Faith Christian Academy students volunteered on Nov. 14 to bag items for distribution to the community on Nov. 16 and 17.

The Thanksgiving Blessing is made possible through the sponsorship of Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation, McCall Farms, Woody and Henry Swink, Piggly Wiggly (Palmetto St. location), State Farm Insurance Agency/ Scotty Campbell Agent, Lake City Community Hospital and the generosity of many community individuals and businesses.

The mission of the Senior Citizens Association is to provide a full range of services and assistance to senior citizens 60 years and older in Florence County. The purpose of these services is to assure the physical and mental well-being of the county’s senior citizens, to enhance their quality of life, and to assist them in maintaining independence.

SCA not only provides a full range of services to seniors over 60 it also works through the Leatherman Senior Center, Lake City Senior Center, and group dining sites to partner with other agencies and county/ cities to provide social events, lunch programs and, classes that are geared towards seniors over 50.

If you or someone you know may need a hot meal, transportation, homecare, or just a daily telephone call, SCA provides these services and will gladly lead you in the right direction. SCA senior centers offer memberships for $35 a year or $125 for lifetime memberships. Please call 843-669-6761 for more information.
