Museum supports school transportation thru grant

The Florence County Museum has established a grant program to assist Pee Dee area schools with transportation costs for field trips to the museum.

Although the Florence County Museum’s educational programs are free to students, the cost of transportation can put a burden on the school and is often transferred to the students as field trip fees. “We recognize the hard work that our teachers provide for the education of our children. We also understand the financial struggles that field trip expenses can place on families. Although the Florence County Museum provides educational experiences at no cost, schools are required to arrange for their own transportation and these fees add up,” said Andrew R. Stout, museum director.

In an effort to have an all-inclusive experience, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Sumter, and Williamsburg County District school teachers can apply for a $200 grant to assist with transportation costs, reimbursable at the close of Florence County Museum programs.

“At the Florence County Museum, we are passionate about sharing the rich cultural, artistic and historical heritage of the Pee Dee with students of all ages. It is our hope that every student in the Pee Dee region has the opportunity to visit the Florence County Museum and to participate in an engaging, standards-based educational experience,” said Kimberly Washburn, Curator of Education

“We are very fortunate to have outstanding cultural resources in Florence. The work and funding that has been provided to construct our outstanding facilities has not gone unnoticed. Now that we can provide the opportunities that we all have desired, it is time we see that all of our children participate, regardless of their walk of life, “ added Stout.

The Florence County Museum is thankful for the continued Partners in Education who help to make the Transportation Assistance Grants possible. It is with the help of community members that the museum can continue to change lives.
