Wilson Band named Outstanding
JARROD DEAS

Wilson High School Band has received the South Carolina Band Directors Association’s Outstanding Performance Award. This award is the highest possible award given to a band program in the state of South Carolina.

In a letter last week from Kevin E. Horton, Awards Chairman of the South Carolina Band Directors Association, Horton wrote that points to the Wilson High Band accumulated through participation and ratings earned at the following state-sponsored performance events: marching band championships (high school level); all-state and region band; concert performance assessment; and solo/ ensemble festival. Horton went on to explain that the band had received the points necessary to earn the 2017-18 SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award.

”Your outstanding marching, concert, and individual student performance are a testament to the high quality of teaching taking place in the band department at your school,” stated Horton.

Jarrod Deas is director of bands at Wilson High School. A native of Florence, Deas is a graduate of Wilson High and received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from Florida A&M University. He joined the Wilson faculty in 2016. Under Deas’ leadership, this is the second year in a row that the Wilson band has received the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award. Deas maintains professional affiliations with the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA), and the South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA).
