The application opportunity is open to Florence area high school graduating seniors who have been accepted to an institution of higher learning in the state of South Carolina with the intent to pursue a degree and career in elementary education. Applicants must also have graduated from Theodore Lester Elementary High School.

This scholarship is in memory of Michelle Yolanda Glenn Carey who emphatically declared, “I want to positively affect the lives of children.” She dedicated 20 years to the teaching of many kindergarten students at Theodore Lester Elementary School. Her teaching skills extended into second generations of her initial students. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting, being taught by her or working with her, very quickly realized that when she was in the classroom or in an instructional capacity, she was on a mission with passion and a smile.
