Eighth graders selected as junior scholars

Thirty-nine eighth grade students in Florence School District One have been named 2018 South Carolina Junior Scholars.

The South Carolina Department of Education sponsors the South Carolina Junior Scholars program. It identifies students that demonstrated exceptionally high scholastic achievement and intellectual ability.

This is based on the students’ performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). Each of these students took the PSAT as an eighth-grader and scored a 550 or above in reading and writing or a 530 or above in mathematics.

Junior scholars receive opportunities that will facilitate their intellectual growth, broaden their individual interest and promote their scholastic achievement in ways not currently available in the school program. These activities are provided during the academic school year or the summer following the eighth grade and throughout secondary school.

The Pee Dee Education Center and Francis Marion University recently hosted the Regional Junior Scholars Ceremony in the Chapman Auditorium at Francis Marion University. At the ceremony, two Florence One students received special recognition: Logan Smith from Sneed Middle received the highest evidence based reading and writing score for the Pee Dee, and Robert Ardis of Southside Middle received the highest mathematics score from the Pee Dee area.

Sneed Middle School Junior Scholars are Olivia Campbell, Connor Cook, Timothy Ervin, Sebastian Harding, Alcinda Meeker, Zoey Moore, Parker Morrison, Jessica Pham, Lauren Reynolds, Kate Sansbury, Jordan Sinclair and Logan Smith.

Southside Middle School Junior Scholars are Robert Ardis, Cindy Brewer, Noah Junkins, Samuel Reeder, Kaylee Reigel, Leranda Saverance, Raymond Taylor and Sierra Trotter.

Williams Middle School Junior Scholars are Caleb Beckley, Anilyn Bonds, Myles Chassereau, Tyree Davis, Annabelle Devault, Ava Flintrop, Thomas Garland, Bryannna Grice, Ridgely Jackson, Dylan Lambert, Kylah Rainey, Ruqaiya Shumail, Derrick Smith, Olivia Townsend, Sai Sivani Vishnubhotla, Joseph Walker, William Walker, Kennedy White, and Marguerite Wilson.
