School Foundation Gala honors Ben Ingram

Ben Ingram was honored as the 2015 FSD1 Distinguished Graduate on Oct. 13 at the School Foundation Gala. The son of Susan Ingram and the late Chip Ingram, Ben grew up in Florence where he attended Royall, Moore, Sneed, before entering the International Baccalaureate program at Williams and Wilson High School.

Last year he was the winner of 2014 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions. Ingram told his audience that he was well prepared by FSD1 schools to compete on Jeopardy. Although he promised himself he would not allow his experience on Jeopardy! to change his life, he admitted that it had, explaining, “This has changed my life for the better.” Those changes included making new friends, becoming closer to family, and getting re-acquainted with old friends.

In recognition, the School Foundation presented Ben with a framed copy of a 1913 map of Florence County.

In keeping with the theme of the evening, all three high school academic challenge teams played several rounds of Jeopardy! with answers to local and historic facts and trivia.
Near the end of the evening, South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman recognized the Florence One Honor Roll Teachers and presented the 2015 District Teacher of the Year, Dr. Leah Barley of Royall Elementary.

Spearman told the audience of educators and education supporters that she wished she could clone them and the foundation and drop them in all of the communities across this state.
“I am going to be talking about you and what you are doing through the Florence foundation as I travel across South Carolina,” she commented. “Thank you for the opportunities that you are giving every child in Florence District One."
