Volunteers needed to help with Christmas campaign
TOYS FOR TOTS – Jim Williams poses with some of the cars and truck toys to be distributed by local volunteers with the US. Marine Corps Reserves

The local Toys For Tots organization seeks volunteers to help with this year’s campaign. They particularly need drivers to make 12 stops a week to check on toy bins and pick up money canisters, said Jim Williams, coordinator for Toys For Tots, along with Rujon Williams. “We also need people to sort and pack toys and to call people to pick up their packages, he added. Men and women may assist offering as much or as little time as they can, Williams said. He is grateful for all help.

The Toys for Tots campaign is a registered trademark of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. The local campaign is co-sponsored by the Marine Corps League Detachment 410. Williams started the local Toys for Tots campaign in Florence 13 years ago. It now serves five counties, including Florence, Darlington, Marion, Dillon and Williamsburg. He is expecting a big outcry from Williamsburg County this year because of the heavy flooding. So many people lost everything they had, he said.

This year the campaign is starting with $12,000 below what is needed, so there is a desperate need for cash donations, he stressed. The Toys for Toys headquarters is located in the Freedom Plaza Shopping Center on 1621 S.Irby Street. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the last three years, Toys for Tots provided gifts for more than 12,000 children.

This year, the needs are expected to be around 20,000 children. The community is asked to help with this effort by donating new toys or money to purchase them. Cardboard bins for toys and collection containers for money may be found in businesses and churches in the Pee Dee area. All money collected locally stays in this area, Williams noted. Donations are tax deductible. To volunteer, come to the store at Freedom Plaza or call Jim Williams at 758-5164. You may also fill out an application online at toysfortots.com.
