Florence organizations teamed up to get Emojional!
Florence, SC - Teen Pregnancy Prevention Awareness Month is a perfect time to bring awareness and self-esteem to young ladies in communities nationwide. Here in Florence, eight mothers and their daughters participated in Let’s Get Emojional, an emoji-themed mother-daughter event sponsored bycivic organizationMINGLE of the Pee Dee with assistance from a grant from the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The event was facilitated and hosted by Girls University on Saturday, May 13th from 2pm-4:30pm.
The event hoped to raise self-esteem by encouraging mothers and daughters to embrace their own inner and unique beauty. The goal was to empower mothers and daughters to become stronger and more confident women together. A popular session at the event by Dr. Germina Suffrant was about health conversations between mothers and daughters.
Per a statement by Girls University, “Research shows that there is a direct and distinct link between a mother’s influence on her daughter’s ideas about health and body image. It’s important for mothers to become more aware of their attitudes towards their own body and those of their daughters, mothers can help them withstand the powerful influence of a media and celebrity culture that undermines their sense of beauty and self-worth”.
